More About Gulfstream GIV SP

Introducing the Gulfstream G-IVSP, the fourth iteration in the esteemed Gulfstream family lineup, bringing forth a host of innovative features that set it apart from its predecessors. Foremost among these enhancements is the replacement of the Rolls-Royce Spey engines with the Rolls-Royce Tay Mk 611-8 engines, a change later incorporated into subsequent Gulfstream models like the G300 and 400. This intercontinental-range business jet has not only been a pioneer but has also seen an increase in its maximum takeoff weight compared to its forerunners.

Each of the two Rolls-Royce Mk 611-8 engines generates a thrust of 13,850 lbs and requires inspection every 8,000 hours. The upgraded Rolls-Royce powerplant is credited with a remarkable 15% enhancement in fuel efficiency, resulting in reduced operational costs and lower noise levels. A notable addition is the installation of a six-screen, full-color Electronic Flight Instrument System (EFIS), complemented by the Honeywell SPZ-8000 avionics suite within the cockpit of the GIV-SP.

This avionics suite encompasses Collins radios, Flight Management System (FMS), and dual Honeywell laser inertial reference systems, with further options available, including triple laser Inertial Navigation Systems (INS), dual FMS, and an air-to-ground telephone. Breaking new ground within the Gulfstream family, the GIV-SP incorporates Goodyear Aerospace’s brake-by-wire system and a Dowty fail-passive steer-by-wire system, greatly enhancing pilot maneuverability. The GIV-SP showcases a higher takeoff weight, 1,400 pounds more than the GIV, reaching 74,600 pounds, contributing to improved hot-and-high performance. It maintains an impressive high-speed cruise of 476 knots true airspeed. When compared to the GIII, both the GIV and GIV-SP offer an additional 4.5 feet of usable interior space while preserving the renowned stand-up cabin characteristic of Gulfstream aircraft.

The cabin’s dimensions encompass a length of 45.1 feet, a width of 7.3 feet, and a height of 6.1 feet, comfortably accommodating up to 19 passengers. Onboard conveniences include a spacious galley and a full-sized lavatory, complete with a shower. The Gulfstream G-IVSP stands as an exemplary choice for a midsize, intercontinental-range business jet. It underscores Gulfstream’s commitment to innovation, featuring a fresh design, enhanced engines, and expanded cabin space. Such stellar performance has made the GIV an influential model, serving as a blueprint for many of Gulfstream’s subsequent aircraft.
